MariaK ->  good morning

2009-05-17 11:27:26  MariaK ->  or good day

2009-05-17 11:28:09  lparisi ->  Hello Rhonda

2009-05-17 11:28:44  Rhonda ->  Hey lparisi et al

2009-05-17 11:29:17  lparisi ->  Hi Pat

2009-05-17 11:29:25  loonyhiker ->  good morning!

2009-05-17 11:30:44  loonyhiker ->  be right back - gotta reboot

2009-05-17 11:31:20  Lisa Parisi ->  Hello Kathy

2009-05-17 11:31:31  kathycassidy ->  Good morning

2009-05-17 11:32:08  kathycassidy ->  Not started yet, or is there a problem with my audio?

2009-05-17 11:32:49  Lisa Parisi ->  We are streaming on ustream and ETTA

2009-05-17 11:33:10  Lisa Parisi ->  Can you hear us?

2009-05-17 11:33:12  PeggyG ->  Hi - Hearing the stream now

2009-05-17 11:34:19  PeggyG ->  audio is much better with ustream than itune--loud hum on iTunes

2009-05-17 11:34:38  sheila ->  Thanks Peggy.

2009-05-17 11:35:23  PeggyG ->  Have my article in hand--ready to go :-)

2009-05-17 11:35:34  minhaaj ->  paste the link Peggy.

2009-05-17 11:35:42  PeggyG ->  It's a magazine :-)

2009-05-17 11:35:51  minhaaj ->  ahh not familiar with that

2009-05-17 11:36:09  PeggyG ->  Ed Leadership-I subscribe to the journal :-)

2009-05-17 11:36:14  minhaaj ->  you definitely are Lisa.

2009-05-17 11:36:38  minhaaj ->  share the journals you read Peggy :)

2009-05-17 11:37:28  minhaaj ->  ok multitasking is when you do two 'work-related' things together. conversing with co-teacher isn't multitasking

2009-05-17 11:37:33  minhaaj ->  hehe IMO atleast.

2009-05-17 11:37:39  techyturner ->  I'm playing with my boy during this time.

2009-05-17 11:37:42  techyturner ->  :)

2009-05-17 11:38:14  PeggyG ->  It's in the March journal for Educational Leadership  http://www.ascd.org

2009-05-17 11:38:30  Lisa Parisi ->  Thank you for the link Peggy...

2009-05-17 11:38:42  minhaaj ->  omg! sheila would be the last one whose worst at multitasking

2009-05-17 11:39:00  minhaaj ->  i dont believe it *)

2009-05-17 11:39:14  sroseman ->  article link please ..sorry for joining late

2009-05-17 11:40:58  PeggyG ->  http://ascd.org/publications/educational_leadership/mar09/vol66/num06/ab...

2009-05-17 11:41:01  minhaaj ->  I just noticed, Edtechtalk have its own shirts! wish i could have one. its awesome

2009-05-17 11:41:35  PeggyG ->  where are yo seeing the ETT shirts?

2009-05-17 11:41:51  minhaaj ->  bottom right

2009-05-17 11:41:59  minhaaj ->  :D

2009-05-17 11:41:59  minhaaj ->  sorry i detracked you

2009-05-17 11:42:04  sheila ->  :)

2009-05-17 11:42:41  PeggyG ->  even task switching causes you to spend more time on the tasks

2009-05-17 11:42:56  kathycassidy ->  I think with all the pressures that I feel in my life, I feel guilty if I am not doing more than one thing at a time.  There is so much that I want to read and hear.  I'm listening to this while I am getting ready/making my bed, etc.

2009-05-17 11:43:00  minhaaj ->  article looks great.

2009-05-17 11:43:14  loonyhiker ->  i'm knitting and listening to this

2009-05-17 11:43:49  PeggyG ->  that's the key though Kathy! you're doing a physical task while listening--that's good multitasking :-)

2009-05-17 11:44:00  kathycassidy ->  If there is ever a calm moment in my classroom, I feel I need to have a student at my desk listening to his/her counting or letter sounds or whatever.

2009-05-17 11:44:04  minhaaj ->  just a bad day Sheila

2009-05-17 11:44:08  loonyhiker ->  i hear a voice but lost lisa

2009-05-17 11:44:19  PeggyG ->  only hearing Sheila right now

2009-05-17 11:44:22  minhaaj ->  not for you Sheila

2009-05-17 11:44:22  Lisa Parisi ->  We should all be on now.

2009-05-17 11:44:28  loonyhiker ->  okay that must be sheila i hear

2009-05-17 11:44:48  Scott Shelhart ->  lisa is on shoutcast, only one person on ustream

2009-05-17 11:44:50  minhaaj ->  lol yes and some strawberries Sheila

2009-05-17 11:45:08  PeggyG ->  the ustream is only Sheila--iTunes is Lisa and Maria continuing to talk :-)

2009-05-17 11:45:12  loonyhiker ->  but u have a lovely voice :)

2009-05-17 11:45:28  minhaaj ->  you want me to join Sheila ? :)

2009-05-17 11:45:46  Scott Shelhart ->  all better

2009-05-17 11:45:48  loonyhiker ->  ahh now i hear y'all

2009-05-17 11:46:06  PeggyG ->  hooray! there we go!

2009-05-17 11:46:20  PeggyG ->  forced multi-tasking :-)

2009-05-17 11:46:26  loonyhiker ->  i can't just sit and listen - then my mind wanders

2009-05-17 11:46:58  meacherteacher ->  Are there some things which shouldn't be multi-tasked?  Example: I don't usually listen live because my four-year old is around and it is family time.

2009-05-17 11:47:27  Rhonda ->  the last webinair I took in had no chat room and I couldn't stay on task - had to check my twitter, e-mail, etc. at the same time - if I can't stay focused with just one sensory input what chance do my students have?

2009-05-17 11:47:33  PeggyG ->  that's why some people doodle :-) you focus better on the listening but doodling isn't another cognitive activity

2009-05-17 11:47:35  minhaaj ->  i wonder whats the point where multitasking turns into information overload

2009-05-17 11:48:08  sheila ->  Good point Minhaaj - where is that boundary

2009-05-17 11:48:11  sheila ->  ?

2009-05-17 11:48:25  PeggyG ->  @meacherteacher-that is such a good point. You're not there for your kids if you're not listening to them.

2009-05-17 11:48:29  loonyhiker ->  i am on a board and i have to multitask or i can't focus

2009-05-17 11:48:34  minhaaj ->  i guess its for the individual to define for themselves.

2009-05-17 11:49:04  loonyhiker ->  that's exactly it - silence is distracting!

2009-05-17 11:49:10  minhaaj ->  it maybe more easy to do physical multitasking but intellectual/learning multitasking is harder

2009-05-17 11:49:12  sheila ->  I agree!

2009-05-17 11:49:29  PeggyG ->  I don't like going to dinner with my grandkids because I never get to talk to them--always texting

2009-05-17 11:49:38  minhaaj ->  lol

2009-05-17 11:49:57  minhaaj ->  you can't blame them Peggy. You have a iphone. you just don't have gossips to share with 4th graders

2009-05-17 11:49:58  minhaaj ->  lol

2009-05-17 11:50:11  loonyhiker ->  i don't have txting on my phone for that reason

2009-05-17 11:50:14  PeggyG ->  even if you CAN multi-task, should you? if so, when?

2009-05-17 11:50:31  minhaaj ->  it can be helpful @loony

2009-05-17 11:50:35  meacherteacher ->  @PeggyG That is the critical question!

2009-05-17 11:50:37  loonyhiker ->  @peggyg i think u r right - there are times when you should and shouldn't

2009-05-17 11:50:46  PeggyG ->  I do blame them Minhaaj. I never use my iPhone when I'm at dinner with other people.

2009-05-17 11:50:56  loonyhiker ->  @minhaa it would take me so long to txt, that it would be painful to watch lol

2009-05-17 11:50:56  Scott Shelhart ->  Live talk shows do not mix well with working on homework assignments.

2009-05-17 11:51:03  Rhonda ->  My sound cut out for awhile - was there some mention made to a journal article on multitasking - the Gasser and Palfrey article in Educational Leadership?

2009-05-17 11:51:09  minhaaj ->  well thats part of manners i think Peggy but Hey thats why we call them kids

2009-05-17 11:51:10  minhaaj ->  :)

2009-05-17 11:51:15  meacherteacher ->  I guess when to text becomes a new category of etiquette

2009-05-17 11:51:20  PeggyG ->  Yes Rhonda-that's the article that prompted this discussion

2009-05-17 11:51:39  Scott Shelhart ->  Is there a link to the article?

2009-05-17 11:52:13  PeggyG ->  yes Scott but every time I leave the site I get logged out. :-(

2009-05-17 11:52:16  kcaise ->  i totally agree sheila

2009-05-17 11:52:36  Scott Shelhart ->  ok.  I'll tr to find it later.

2009-05-17 11:53:01  loonyhiker ->  music when i drive in traffic calms me down

2009-05-17 11:53:13  minhaaj ->  they even do that driving a motorbike

2009-05-17 11:53:43  loonyhiker ->  i recently saw either a bus or train wreck that was caused by the driver txting

2009-05-17 11:53:46  PeggyG ->  many teens even take their phones to bed and are awake on and off all night sending/receiving messages--not good for getting required sleep to function well during the day

2009-05-17 11:53:55  Scott Shelhart ->  I've sent a text while driving, but never on my motorcycle.

2009-05-17 11:53:59  Rhonda ->  Has anyone tried open dialogue with their students about the strengths/weaknesses of multi-tasking yet?

2009-05-17 11:54:09  minhaaj ->  You can download the paper Gasser and Palfrey article in Educational Leadership? here http://www.archive.org/details/paper_121

2009-05-17 11:54:32  kcaise ->  not even hands free?

2009-05-17 11:54:33  meacherteacher ->  Teacher in class next to mine tapes paper over the desks so that kids can doodle, write notes, sketch,...during class time.  She talks with them about how to use the paper to be better listeners and learners

2009-05-17 11:54:33  PeggyG ->  http://ascd.org/publications/educational_leadership/mar09/vol66/num06/to...

2009-05-17 11:55:26  sheila ->  There was the subway crash in Boston. Operator was texting. He did admit it immediately though.

2009-05-17 11:55:27  Lisa Parisi ->  Meacher ILOVE that idea!

2009-05-17 11:55:35  Rhonda ->  @Scott Shelhart - good decision not to text on a motorcycle!

2009-05-17 11:55:37  PeggyG ->  no matter who I'm talking with, if they are texting someone else they aren't listening to me or talking to me

2009-05-17 11:55:53  minhaaj ->  kids even call on motobike here

2009-05-17 11:55:56  Sarah S ->  Why we allow the digital communication (audio or text) to take priority over the f2f is beyond me.

2009-05-17 11:55:58  minhaaj ->  very dangerous.

2009-05-17 11:56:13  Sarah S ->  The holdover from when a phone call during the day was usually an emergency?

2009-05-17 11:56:21  Scott Shelhart ->  Yep.  I have called on the bike.  Phone fits between helmet and ear just fine.

2009-05-17 11:57:03  minhaaj ->  well glad you have helmets there Scott

2009-05-17 11:57:05  minhaaj ->  :)

2009-05-17 11:57:13  PeggyG ->  how can we help students to assess whether the multitasking is helping or hurting them in different situations?

2009-05-17 11:57:22  sheila ->  Wow Scott!  :)

2009-05-17 11:57:37  Scott Shelhart ->  Oh les.  All 4 of us have helmets with intercom, speakers, etc.

2009-05-17 11:57:56  sheila ->  Bring me again please?

2009-05-17 11:58:09  sheila ->  ex

2009-05-17 11:58:13  sheila ->  tx

2009-05-17 11:58:22  PeggyG ->  I find that if I'm participating in a chat room while listening to a webinar I'm not really doing both at the same time. I miss things from the presenter and I miss things in the chat

2009-05-17 11:58:51  Scott Shelhart ->  I'm doing that right now Maria.

2009-05-17 11:58:57  meacherteacher ->  @PeggyG I think they need plenty of opportunity to experiement and possibly experience failure to see it for themselves

2009-05-17 11:59:08  minhaaj ->  i am strangely able to synthesis that Peggy. My auditory and tactical senses seem to work perfectly independent

2009-05-17 11:59:13  Sarah S ->  on-task vs off-task multitasking? That might e part of the issue.

2009-05-17 11:59:33  kcaise ->  i have heard of several college professors that ban laptops in their lectures

2009-05-17 11:59:36  PeggyG ->  the article talked about the studies that measured the time it took to complete tasks with multitasking-very interesting

2009-05-17 11:59:55  sroseman ->  I am not bringing a computer to NECC

2009-05-17 12:00:01  loonyhiker ->  i have to be doing something tactile in order to process things auditory

2009-05-17 12:00:04  minhaaj ->  technology in higher education is terrible. best work is done at K-12 level. or atleast the work that matters

2009-05-17 12:00:27  PeggyG ->  but it's not tactical when you're typing in a chat--it's framing thoughts and communicating them--that's a cognitive task

2009-05-17 12:00:50  loonyhiker ->  i plan to spend at least 45 min. every day of the 3 hr. grad class i teach on technology

2009-05-17 12:00:53  minhaaj ->  agreed.

2009-05-17 12:00:54  Rhonda ->  I liked the experiment the authors suggested - time to complete a task while multi-tasking vs. time it takes without multi-tasking - has anyone tried doing that with their students yet? I want to try it at my school with adult learners

2009-05-17 12:01:02  minhaaj ->  but somehow i don't lose track of both

2009-05-17 12:01:27  PeggyG ->  @Rhonda-I think that would be a great thing to do with the kids

2009-05-17 12:01:56  loonyhiker ->  that may be a great exercise in my class to do (grad students are teachers)

2009-05-17 12:02:07  PeggyG ->  my hunch is that the results are the same for both kids and adults

2009-05-17 12:03:01  loonyhiker ->  i used to play classical, instrumental, and celtic music when they were working independently at their desk

2009-05-17 12:03:17  PeggyG ->  this kind of chat that is part of a conversation can help me stay focused on the topic

2009-05-17 12:03:44  meacherteacher ->  I remember being punished in grade 5 for drawing during class time, even thought I was trying to sketch the map we were looking at in social studies!

2009-05-17 12:03:56  Scott Shelhart ->  @Peggy Exactly!

2009-05-17 12:04:02  meacherteacher ->  That was what I needed to do to remember the material

2009-05-17 12:04:29  PeggyG ->  the article also made a great point about how task switching takes a lot of time even if you aren't doing multiple things at the same time

2009-05-17 12:04:51  Rhonda ->  @Peggy - me too - quite honestly this is the best way for me to participate - I'm kina' quiet in large groups

2009-05-17 12:05:00  Sarah S ->  (See - definitely not your fault Sheila!)

2009-05-17 12:05:06  Lisa Parisi ->  Sheila keeps dropping out.  better to get the conversation from ETTA

2009-05-17 12:06:07  PeggyG ->  I think we do have to decide what works for us individually--not the same for everyone and it depends on what our goal/purpose is at the time

2009-05-17 12:06:33  Rhonda ->  Yes - task switching can take a lot of time - It's actually something that library staff are deliberately trained in how to deal with because our day is FULL of task switching

2009-05-17 12:06:57  PeggyG ->  with very young kids I think they do one thing at a time but may jump from one thing to another frequently

2009-05-17 12:07:07  sroseman ->  transitions .. a challenge

2009-05-17 12:07:14  meacherteacher ->  I think that kids who struggle to follow a set of directions really flounder when they are asked to also work on a second task

2009-05-17 12:07:35  PeggyG ->  @meacherteacher-that is very true in my experience

2009-05-17 12:07:50  Rhonda ->  I agree - multi-tasking is not going to go away = and I like that the authors acknowledge that it can be taught

2009-05-17 12:08:26  PeggyG ->  awareness is probably one of the biggest points--you need to know when you're doing it and how it's affecting you.

2009-05-17 12:08:43  meacherteacher ->  @PeggyG Yes!

2009-05-17 12:09:15  Rhonda ->  some teachers at my school are still working on ways to eliminate students multi-tasking/focussing on them

2009-05-17 12:09:17  loonyhiker ->  at one of my board mtgs, the pres. asked that we close our laptops so she would know we were paying attn - i was offended by this since we were all educators and i felt she was just controlling

2009-05-17 12:09:18  sroseman ->  sroseman, I am Sue

2009-05-17 12:09:45  PeggyG ->  still hearing the hiss and think it's from Lisa

2009-05-17 12:09:47  loonyhiker ->  i hear sizzle too

2009-05-17 12:10:14  Sarah S ->  @loonyhiker - yikes. I don't suppose you have 1:1 with kids, huh.  Does the admin have a clue?

2009-05-17 12:10:28  PeggyG ->  I'm not multitasking :-) listening and typing :-)

2009-05-17 12:10:58  PeggyG ->  go on mute Lisa

2009-05-17 12:11:17  loonyhiker ->  my parents wouldn't let me watch dark shadows

2009-05-17 12:11:25  meacherteacher ->  @loonyhiker - That's tough.  Mostly those educators will be using their laptops on task, but my principal is jokes about the fact that he searches eBay during management meetings at the board when he is not interested

2009-05-17 12:11:26  loonyhiker ->  i still heard it even when lisa muted

2009-05-17 12:11:29  PeggyG ->  no problem - we can still hear :-)

2009-05-17 12:11:44  derrallg ->  I just never did home work so didn't have to worry, just came home watched TV

2009-05-17 12:11:46  sroseman ->  lunchtime..will return later

2009-05-17 12:11:57  Lisa Parisi ->  Derrall! LOL

2009-05-17 12:12:04  loonyhiker ->  our board mtgs are on wkends and can last 10 hrs. a day - i can NOT sit and just listen for 10 hrs

2009-05-17 12:12:07  PeggyG ->  @derrallg--too funny!!

2009-05-17 12:12:07  Cathy E ->   My college girls prefected multi-tasking in 9th grade.  Now that they are in college and doing 3 things at a time (and still making A's) - I think it is a learned skill

2009-05-17 12:12:10  Lisa Parisi ->  Peggy can I call you in now?

2009-05-17 12:12:21  sheila ->  I guess I have a really bad connection today. :(

2009-05-17 12:12:26  Rhonda ->  @Sarah S - I've never visited a 1:1 program or looked at the pedagogy - is it not appropriate to ask students to close the laptops from time to time?

2009-05-17 12:13:24  loonyhiker ->  if i'm overwhelmed and under pressure, i have to make a task list, prioritize, and have to do one thing at a time

2009-05-17 12:13:41  PeggyG ->  if you have a deadline on something I think you need to focus on that ONE thing to get it done well and on time

2009-05-17 12:14:15  Sarah S ->  @Rhonda Oh sure - good point. The difference is that sometimes it's used as a crutch instead of figuring out how to make the technology a vital part of the lesson (a backchannel, additional resources, notetaking, etc).

2009-05-17 12:14:59  meacherteacher ->   We have 1:1 and most teachers do ask for lids down when giving instructions.  The ones who are the best users are begining to teach kids how to use them effectively while listening (notes, doodles, chatting,...ON TOPIC)

2009-05-17 12:15:22  derrallg ->  I remember when I got to college that I was proud that I learned how to study and work in a loud cafe with music and conversations happening

2009-05-17 12:15:32  kcaise ->  i turned off the incoming notifications in tweetdeck

2009-05-17 12:15:39  PeggyG ->  there are definitely times when it's appropriate to have laptops open and times when it's not

2009-05-17 12:15:45  Rhonda ->  thanks Sarah & meacherteacher  - that's what I was thinking too

2009-05-17 12:16:04  Sarah S ->  @meacherteacher Absolutely - the on topic aspect of the multitasking can add depth, value, context, and even differentiation to the lesson. It does require the student to have some self discipline to stay on task, though.

2009-05-17 12:16:24  Cathy E ->  I agree with that Maria

2009-05-17 12:17:03  meacherteacher ->  @Sarah S - Yes, and spotting the off-task students becomes a challenge when you are busy!

2009-05-17 12:17:13  Cathy E ->  If I am working on a project - I alwasy keep Twitter open, cause 9 times out of 10 something will pop up on Twitter that I can use in my project.

2009-05-17 12:17:17  PeggyG ->  but that's doing one thing at a time Maria and just changing tasks

2009-05-17 12:17:39  loonyhiker ->  especially if i hit a "road block" - it helps me to go on to something else and come back to this with a fresh mind

2009-05-17 12:17:41  MariaK ->  yes - peggy - it is - in that example - task switching

2009-05-17 12:18:04  MariaK ->  my mind is thinking about multiple tasks

2009-05-17 12:18:49  derrallg ->  @lisaP I do the same end up with 20 open boxes sitting on desks and tables

2009-05-17 12:19:01  Sarah S ->  One interesting twist on the 1:1 is orienting yourself in the room so you see screens and not necessarily faces as people are working.

2009-05-17 12:19:16  PeggyG ->  I hate it when I start to do something and notice something else on the way and then forget what it was I started to do--tough getting old!! :-)

2009-05-17 12:19:47  meacherteacher ->  My father taught me to carry on 2 simultanious conversations as a kid.  This drives most people nuts (it is a bit like texting at dinner), but it means that I have learned to mentally multi-task

2009-05-17 12:19:51  derrallg ->  @sarahS I agree it made a big difference for me when I was in a classroom with computers against the wall and could see all the screens

2009-05-17 12:19:57  Sarah S ->  The whiteboard on my refrigerator is such a key to keeping track of my week!

2009-05-17 12:20:11  PeggyG ->  great idea Sarah S :-)

2009-05-17 12:20:24  Sarah S ->  Color coded lists!

2009-05-17 12:20:56  kcaise ->  by john medina

2009-05-17 12:21:08  derrallg ->  @lisaP sounds like you need to create more of a GTD type of list

2009-05-17 12:21:34  PeggyG ->  have you read the Frog book? talks about how we put off the challenging tasks and do the easy ones first which means we often don't get to the really important tasks

2009-05-17 12:21:46  meacherteacher ->  @Sarah S the only problem is that all desks must face the same way.  With dynamic desk groupings, there is no point in my room to see all the screens.  I must move around, but can't if I am with a small group.  I look for certain signs in their body language, or take an occaisional stroll

2009-05-17 12:22:25  Cathy E ->  @meacherteacher - I agree I think it can be learned

2009-05-17 12:22:36  PeggyG ->  Eat that Frog is more about procrastination than multi-tasking though

2009-05-17 12:23:26  Cathy E ->  haha Maria - I was in that situation last night

2009-05-17 12:23:44  PeggyG ->  http://www.eatthatfrogmovie.com/  short movie about Eat that Frog--great but don't click on it now-starts autoplaying :-)

2009-05-17 12:23:45  meacherteacher ->  @PeggyG  I am a class A procrastinator - I don't know that book, maybe I should, though:)

2009-05-17 12:23:56  PeggyG ->  it's a great book!!

2009-05-17 12:24:22  PeggyG ->  "If you have to eat two frogs, eat the ugliest one first." :-)

2009-05-17 12:24:40  Cathy E ->  Clicker theory is exactly opposite in my house

2009-05-17 12:24:57  PeggyG ->  that's exactly what happens when we check Twitter/Plurk, Lisa--check to see what we may be missing :-)

2009-05-17 12:25:58  PeggyG ->  great story Lisa--how much do we tune out in our environment?

2009-05-17 12:26:11  loonyhiker ->  lol lisa

2009-05-17 12:26:30  derrallg ->  your gustatory experience was just too good

2009-05-17 12:26:53  loonyhiker ->  that is me - i have to be able to see my environment

2009-05-17 12:26:56  Lisa Parisi ->  Derrall...it was friendly's...it couldn't have been that good.

2009-05-17 12:27:03  PeggyG ->  predator/prey ?? very interesting connection!

2009-05-17 12:27:20  Sarah S ->  Lids down is definitely a necessary tool.

2009-05-17 12:27:49  Sarah S ->  It just worries me when the teachers default is no laptops, and the exception to get them up and open.

2009-05-17 12:28:28  derrallg ->  I'm going to have to discuss the "time wasters" that it's ok to just go read a book so someone else can get some work done

2009-05-17 12:28:31  meacherteacher ->  @Sarah S Absolutely!

2009-05-17 12:28:48  PeggyG ->  very good point Sarah S!

2009-05-17 12:28:50  sroseman ->  what is your presentation, Lisa

2009-05-17 12:29:04  Lisa Parisi ->  On using tech to differentiate instruction

2009-05-17 12:29:10  sroseman ->  no laptop

2009-05-17 12:29:19  Sarah S ->  Sheila - Maine has had 1:1 for a long time . . .feel free to check MLTI, MICDL and ACTEM for resources on 1:1 tips for classroom management, integration, etc.

2009-05-17 12:29:22  sroseman ->  I don't have one

2009-05-17 12:29:26  PeggyG ->  I don't like it when presenters say to put your pens down, close your laptops and just listen--I can't process things as well if I can't take notes

2009-05-17 12:29:35  sroseman ->  I will bring my ipodtouch and phone

2009-05-17 12:29:42  Rhonda ->  good point Peggy

2009-05-17 12:29:45  sheila ->  tx sarah

2009-05-17 12:30:03  Sarah S ->  I have to take notes. I also am able to contribute in a chat whereas I'm unlikely to "say" anything f2f

2009-05-17 12:30:07  loonyhiker ->  i can't imagine going to any wokshop w/o my laptop

2009-05-17 12:30:29  derrallg ->  @peggyg I always surprise teachers in my district because I tell them to use the chat I create for them and continue to check email and their learning tools

2009-05-17 12:30:31  PeggyG ->  I use my laptop a lot at NECC--many hands-on sessions, some with software apps that you can't do on an iphone

2009-05-17 12:30:33  loonyhiker ->  i would rather say things in a chat rather than aloud

2009-05-17 12:30:35  sroseman ->  I am going to use old fashion paper and pen

2009-05-17 12:30:41  Sarah S ->  Or ask for feedback directly.

2009-05-17 12:30:46  PeggyG ->  good for you derrallg!

2009-05-17 12:30:52  Sarah S ->  Or post a twitter # stream on the screen

2009-05-17 12:31:09  lynn ->  sue said she was going without a laptop NOT going without ways of connecting

2009-05-17 12:31:34  Sarah S ->  @lynn - good point! iTouch, iPhone, all kinds of options.

2009-05-17 12:31:46  sroseman ->  Can I funstion with an ipod touch

2009-05-17 12:31:51  sroseman ->  function

2009-05-17 12:31:55  lynn ->  sue -- yes you can

2009-05-17 12:32:17  kcaise ->  still skype on the iTouch

2009-05-17 12:32:21  PeggyG ->  @sroseman--depends on what you want to do

2009-05-17 12:32:23  lynn ->  except you can't get edtechtalk with safari on ipodtouch   (at least enter the classroom)

2009-05-17 12:32:44  lynn ->  the chatroom

2009-05-17 12:32:47  Cathy E ->  I will be taking my Dell mini

2009-05-17 12:32:48  PeggyG ->  my iphone battery wouldn't last through a day at NECC!

2009-05-17 12:33:12  Sarah S ->  How can we do it for both ends of the spectrum and the middle

2009-05-17 12:33:31  derrallg ->  I think I need to create more asynchronous learning lists so students don't need toget information when I always expect but can check when they need to

2009-05-17 12:33:38  meacherteacher ->  Not going to NECC this year:-(

2009-05-17 12:33:40  lynn ->  many times my teacher thought I was paying attention...had my eyes on them, nodded at times.....but in reality -- I was miles away -- before laptops

2009-05-17 12:33:45  Sarah S ->  @derrallg Great point. I need more of that too.

2009-05-17 12:34:03  PeggyG ->  @meacherteacher--there will be LOTS of live streams from NECC so you don't have to miss out!!

2009-05-17 12:34:05  loonyhiker ->  this was a great conversation!

2009-05-17 12:34:09  sheila ->  Good point Derrall!

2009-05-17 12:34:10  sroseman ->  I just registered for a NECC twitter badge in SL

2009-05-17 12:34:23  Sarah S ->  It takes way more than three months . .

2009-05-17 12:34:28  sroseman ->  I will pick it up in the Secondlife Lounge

2009-05-17 12:34:36  meacherteacher ->  @lynn  good point - none of this is all that new, just new possibilities

2009-05-17 12:34:51  kcaise ->  depends on the grad program

2009-05-17 12:34:56  Cathy E ->  But some people are just natural teachers

2009-05-17 12:34:59  lynn ->  and new distractions....we used to pass notes...now we twitter

2009-05-17 12:35:05  PeggyG ->  that model is used by Teach for America (intensive, short training to learn how to be a teacher)

2009-05-17 12:35:07  sroseman ->  good topic

2009-05-17 12:35:27  PeggyG ->  @lynn--but teachers confiscated our notes :-)

2009-05-17 12:35:39  lynn ->  and now the teachers confiscate the phones

2009-05-17 12:35:41  meacherteacher ->  @PeggyG  I will try some of the streams, but we have Ped days and I will be at school.  Also, must pack to go to South Africa on July2 with Teacher Without Borders

2009-05-17 12:35:46  kcaise ->  6 months of student teaching?

2009-05-17 12:36:18  PeggyG ->  the great things about the streams from NECC is that they will be archived so you can view them whenever it's convenient--just can't participate in the live chat

2009-05-17 12:36:18  derrallg ->  I still have so much to improve on after teaching almost 10 years, I always end the school year so disatifsfied with myself, I know part of it is things I can't control

2009-05-17 12:36:52  Lisa Parisi ->  ettconversations.blogspot.com

2009-05-17 12:37:02  Rhonda ->  thanks for the great insights!

2009-05-17 12:37:08  meacherteacher ->  Ah, but then how will I multi-task??

2009-05-17 12:37:09  PeggyG ->  @meacherteacher how exciting that you're going to Africa with TWB!!

2009-05-17 12:37:10  sroseman ->  DOES EVERYONE BRING A LAPTOP TO NECC?

2009-05-17 12:37:19  Sarah S ->  Great show!

2009-05-17 12:37:19  lynn ->  sue -- no they don't

2009-05-17 12:37:33  loonyhiker ->  thank you so much!

2009-05-17 12:37:34  PeggyG ->  @sroseman--most people bring laptops to NECC

2009-05-17 12:37:34  sroseman ->  I will be a newbie at NECC

2009-05-17 12:37:35  meacherteacher ->  @PeggyG, yes, I am very excited

2009-05-17 12:37:43  derrallg ->  @sroseman I think the laptop helps between session to check on reflections and events which are happening

2009-05-17 12:37:58  meacherteacher ->  Thanks.  Great show

2009-05-17 12:38:00  sroseman ->  bye and thanks

2009-05-17 12:38:03  PeggyG ->  great conversation!! lots of food for thought! loved having the article as background info

2009-05-17 12:38:04  derrallg ->  thanks for a great show bye

2009-05-17 12:38:05  sroseman ->  great show

2009-05-17 12:38:14  PeggyG ->  bye everyone-have a great day!

2009-05-17 12:38:14  Lisa Parisi ->  Thanks for coming all.
